Exchanging Links Tutorial

The normal "link exchange protocol" is that you first add someone's website link to your site and then email to ask them to add yours to their site OR if they have an older style auto "add your link" go add yours to their site yourself (these are being phased out due to issues with spam) Most of the time you will need to just email them and request that they add your link to their site.

HOW TO ADD A BANNER/ LINK

You will add links and banners from your store manager just like you do a product.

Step 1 - Save the banner from their website to your computer ( .gif files usually.. keep file type same) by right clicking on the banner image and clicking Save As

Step 2 -  Go to Product Add -  category  links  ... put website Name in the Product Name box, website description (optional ) and upload the banner file and put the image name in the Image File box.

Step 3 - put the website URL in the 2nd Image box ( below the description) in this format http://www.nameofsite.com

Save and THATS IT!

If you exchange links with Gone Country Graphics clients who have sites built before 2006 you may find 2 types of auto link exchange programs on our clients' websites.

Add Your Link where you upload banners directly to the page using a Browse button.

OR

Add Your Link where you are asked for a banner URL.

Please note that when exchanging links with other websites that do NOT have these auto link exchanges you will need to email the website owner to request that they add your link to their site for you.

Using the Browse Add Your Link

Step 1 -  Go to their website and right click on their links banner, save it to your computer and then upload it to your store manager to category banners (write down the name of the banner file for your reference) When you upload it to your site it gives the banner a URL on your site.. It would be as follows....

http://www.YOURSITEADDRESS.com/cart/picserve.cgi?picserve=/NAMEOFFILE.gif

OR you can also....

Email the site you wish to exchange links with and ask them to email you their banner URL or invite them to stop by your site and add their link to your links page.

Step 2 -  Go to your links page and click on the words .. CLICK HERE to add your link... fill out the form to add the link to the site. If you do not have a banner URL to put in , just leave that section blank on the form (you can do this if you don't want to mess with uploading banners!)

Deleting A Link- If you wish to delete a link look at the entry and click on the small red e .. it is found in the bottom right hand corner of the entry above the banner and looks like this... May 25 2005 (1) e

The number in parenthesis is the entry number. You can also use the Delete Entries link at the top of the page to delete multiple entries at once... such as from entry 1 to entry 3.

BE CAREFUL - once a link is "pruned" - Deleted - it can not be recovered and has to just be reentered.

The Edit Comments box is only for adding an additional comment to the entry.. you cannot change the text in an entry once it has been added.. so if you need to correct something you need to just delete the entry and start over from new.

The normal "link exchange protocol" is that you first add someone's website link to your site and then ask them to add yours to their site OR if they have a "add your link" go add yours to their site yourself.

ADDING YOUR BANNER TO OTHER SITES

To add your banner to another Gone Country Graphics client's website link page you will need to do the following....

1. Find out your banner URL if you are adding to any of the NEW "Add Your Links". your banner url is your website address /nameofyourbanner.gif

http://www.YOURWEBSITEADDRESS.com/nameofbanner.gif

To find out the name of your banner file, go to your links page, right click on your banner and select SAVE AS and the name will appear in the save box so you can write it down for your reference.

2. To add your link to any of the  "Add Your Links" that have the Browse button to upload your banner... go to your links page and save your banner to your computer by right clicking on the banner and selecting "Save As" and saving the file to your computer. Then go to their site and fill out the form to add your link and click the Browse button to upload the banner file from your computer to their site.

PLEASE NOTE - we are phasing out and replacing the "Add Your Link" because they are often the victims of spamming and hacking. If you have the OLD "Add Your Link" and would like the NEW one installed on your site please email me at [email protected] . We charge just $10.00 to install the new version for you.
